What is a podcast?

A podcast is a pre-recorded program that can be downloaded onto any MP3 player, such as an Ipod, through a personal computer.  The podcast can then be listened to at any time.

A podcast can be subscribed to so that a listener’s computer will automatically download the latest edition of that podcast (the electronic equivalent of having the latest edition of a magazine appear in one’s mailbox).

Podcasting has become a popular way for people to listen to radio shows and other programming whenever they wish, as opposed to having to tune into shows only during their scheduled broadcast.  NPR’s website offers many podcasts of their programs for example.

Why do I do it?

In December 2001 I launched with my friend and colleague Therese Bimka, LCSW (and later Aquilla Frederick, LCSW, Joan Wittig, ADTR and Isabella Scapini Burrell, LCSW) a community-access television program called Frontiers:  The Brooklyn Cable Psychotherapy Journal (later named Frontiers in Psychotherapy.TV).  Through Frontiers Therese, Aquilla, Joan, Isabella and I interviewed many  wonderful guests about varying issues in mental health.  We grew tremendously from the experience.

The significant demands of producing an ongoing television program proved over time to be unsustainable, even for an expanded team of psychotherapist producers.  Eventually we decided to let Frontiers go.  The Frontiers website still exists however and many programs are available there for viewing.  Some programs are also available for professional continuing education units (CEUs) at  www.psychceu.com.  Frontiers programs have been purchased by clinicians as far away as Japan.

With the development of podcasting it became possible for me to once more interview professionals in the fields psychotherapy and mental health.  The production requirements for podcasts are much less extreme than those for television, even community-access television.  Podcast interviews can be conducted face-to-face or over the telephone.  They require no cameras, just two good microphones, a computer and digital recording software.

Why do I do it?  Because meeting and talking to a wide variety of practitioners and other individuals with something to say makes me a better, more current psychotherapist.  I believe too that varied interviews like this will be interesting and useful to the listener.  Certainly that is my goal.

And, finally, putting together something like a television program or a podcast is a lot of fun.
